Homemade Giant Bubbles Recipe

Make the biggest bubbles ever with this homemade giant bubble recipe.

Homemade giant bubbles have been on our to-do list for a while, but we were waiting for optimum weather conditions:  humid and overcast, with very little wind. Well, yesterday was perfect, so I whipped up this Giant Bubble Mix in the morning and we tried it this afternoon.  I am thrilled to report that this bubble recipe really does make the biggest bubbles ever!  And, if you’re looking for cool backyard science activities to do with the kids, you can put this at the top of your list!

Giant Homemade Bubble Recipe

Check out the size of these bubbles!  Science activities don’t get much cooler than this.

giant homemade bubbles

I have to admit, I was not altogether convinced that this bubble recipe would work.  The ingredients seemed strange, the cornstarch didn’t completely dissolve into the solution, and when I dipped my hand in, to kind of test what it felt like, it just didn’t feel like it would be slick and slippery enough to produce bubbles of any kind.

homemade giant bubble mixture

How wrong was I?

enormous bubble

It was FANTASTIC!

I got my inspiration for this activity from Design Dazzle,  but I’ve tweaked the recipe a little because I didn’t have the ummm… interesting “secret ingredient”.  Pop over to see Design Dazzle’s Giant Bubble Kit with printables.  It would be the perfect gift for a summer birthday.

Ready to make some giant bubble mix for yourself?  Here’s what I did:

Homemade Giant Bubble Recipe:

Ingredients for homemade giant bubbles

affiliate links have been added for your convenience

  • 6 cups water (distilled is best but tap water is fine)
  • 1/2 cup blue Dawn dish detergent
*I used the ultra concentrated, but NON ultra (original) is supposed to work even better.
  • 1/2 cup corn starch (corn flour in the UK)
  • 1 tbsp baking powder (not baking soda)
  • 1 tbsp Glycerine
(in place of design dazzle’s secret ingredient)

To make your bubble mixture:

Dissolve the cornstarch in the water, stirring really well.  Then gently stir in the remaining ingredients.  Avoid creating a lot of froth.  Allow your mixture to sit for at least an hour, stirring occasionally if you see the cornstarch settling to the bottom.  Some of ours continued to settle even while we played with it, but it was fine.

The more bubbles you make, the better the mixture gets!

The first several bubbles popped immediately, and I was feeling deflated, but the more we played with the mixture, the silkier it got, and within a few minutes, we were creating HUGE bubbles.  Some would lift off, and float way above the houses and out of sight.  It was crazy-cool!   We found our groove – arms high and walking backwards worked best for us.

How to make a bubble wand for your homemade giant bubbles:

homemade giant bubble wand with straws and string

I used two drinking straws, and a length of yarn that was 6 to 8 times longer than the length of one straw.  Thread the yarn through the straws, tie a knot, and you’re good to go!

2) Weekly Super Family Articles

However, when you are learning the multiplication tables and get up to the nines, that’s getting into the area where the calculations are getting just a bit trickier. There’s a really fun trick that you can do when you are learning the 9 times quickie in mathematics for the nines multiplication tables that you never even need a calculator to get the solution. All you need are two hands and 10 fingers – or two feet and 10 toes if you have on sandals. This is one of the great little mathematical tricks that will take you less than a minute to learn when you know how to do it. The technique that is taught in this lesson makes the 9 Times tables a breeze to learn and remember for the rest of your life.

Here are some math tricks that can help you learn the facts.

  1. Place your hands in front of you with fingers spread out wide.
  2. Bend your third finger for the equation 9 x 3. (Bend your fourth finger for 9 x 4, and so on.)
  3. See that there are 2 fingers in front of your bent finger, and 7 fingers after your bent finger.
  4. This means that the answer to 9 x 3 is 27.

This is only applicable for the multiplication table of 9 (multiplied by up to 10.)

Jack and the Beanstalk

JACK SELLS THE COW

ONCE upon a time there was a poor widow who lived in a little cottage with her only son Jack.

Jack was a giddy, thoughtless boy, but very kind-hearted and affectionate. There had been a hard winter, and after it the poor woman had suffered from fever and ague. Jack did no work as yet, and by degrees they grew dreadfully poor.
The widow saw that there was no means of keeping Jack and herself from starvation but by selling her cow; so one morning she said to her son, `I am too weak to go myself, Jack, so you must take the cow to market for me, and sell her.’

Domestic Cat

Cats are very popular pets and there are many different breeds that all vary in size, colour and markings. An average cat reaches a length of 50-60 cm and weighs about 3-5 kg. The fur may be black, white, brown, grey, red, black and white, tabby (striped) or calico.

Cats are very good hunters and use their strong, sharp claws and teeth to grab and hold their prey. In the wild, cats feed on mice, birds and other small animals.

Senses

Cats see and hear extremely well. They can see in the dark and hear many sounds that humans are not able to hear. To feel their way round, cats use their whiskers.

Cat Language

Cats say ‘meow’. If they feel very comfortable, they purr. If a cat is angry, it wags its tail, lowers its ears, and hisses or growls. Just watch your cat: eyes, ears, tail and body posture tell you a lot about how your cat feels.

Things your cat needs

  • food and water – There are many different sorts of food. Ask your vet or pet shop for assistance. Make sure that your cat always has a bowl of fresh water. Cats never drink where they eat, so put the water bowl at least one metre away from the food bowl.
  • a litter box and litter – Keep the litter box clean or you will soon have some stinky corners in your living room
  • a carrier – You’ll have to see the vet from time to time. If you have to transport a cat, always use a carrier.
  • a place to sleep – This can be a fancy cat’s bed, the carrier or just an old cushion or blanket.
  • toys – Pet shops have lots of toys for cats, but even rolled-up wads of paper make nice toys. The most important thing is that you take your time to play with your cat.
  • a scratching post – A cat needs to scratch its claws and if you don’t have a post, your furniture will suffer.

Ramses and Tari

Meet the ego4u cats

Our two cats are Ramses and Tari. Ramses is a tabby tom-cat. He is very relaxed and his favourite activities are eating and sleeping. Tari is a black cat from the animal shelter. She is very active and loves playing and being snuggled. She doesn’t like visitors, however – when someone comes to see us, she always hides away. While we are working on ego4u, Ramses and Tari are sleeping on the desk in front of the monitor.
